As caring, sharing healers, chiropractors have a preference, in the main to be supportive and nurturing. These qualities are what set chiropractors up for success in their clinical field and get great results for their practice members.

There are times, however when this style is counter-productive and it is appropriate to adopt a different style.

Let’s take the bigger picture of improving prospective and existing client and public perceptions of you and your profession. Maybe we need to get more ‘mongrel’ in our approach.

If your preference for the supportive approach is too great there will be a tendency to play out ‘Dr Nice Guy/Girl’. This is not the sum total of who you are and maybe it would be useful to bring out the ‘dark side’ – that part that doesn’t often get to see the light of day due to our caring nature.

Plenty of opportunities abound for chiropractors to stand up for chiropractic as we are relentlessly slammed for our existence.

This week’s attack comes from a couple of FOSM puppets, Prof Alastair Maclennan & Prof Rob Morrison who write in the Adelaide Advertiser on 9th July regarding the Australian Chiropractic College Initiative and TEQSA’s submission process.

They cough up the same old (and untrue) rhetoric such as “the false belief of vitalism and the unproven ability to correct mythical spinal subluxations to alleviate multiple diseases.”

It seems like the best puppets are highly educated people and I guess that’s why it takes 2 Professors to write a 114 word letter. They can be forgiven for their ignorance but the closure of this letter is what is unprofessional, untrue, defamatory and should piss every chiropractor off.

They say, “Australia cannot afford to graduate any more belief based alternative therapists who make a living by abusing the health of the public”.

Masquerading as the highest levels of medical science these two Professors, without any substantiating evidence are telling the public that YOU are abusing the health of your clientele! How many people will this statement stop or prevent from seeing a chiropractor who may be able to turn their life around – thousands, hundreds or just one? Well one is too many.

To effectively deal with all situations that our life and our professional endeavours throw our way we must draw on all of our faculties. This is where sometimes it’s useful and OK to let the savage ‘mongrel’ come out.

Where are you standing by and watching harm being done to humanity?

Where are you standing by and tolerating aberrant behaviour in your team or clients?

Where are you allowing you or your profession to be bullied by outside forces?

It’s been said that more harm is done in the world by good men and women standing by and doing nothing. When YOU tolerate aberrant behaviour YOU are supporting it and when YOU support something that is against your values a little piece of your spirit dies.

Enlighten your spirit and bring out YOUR MONGREL.
